I loved taking this photo of Miss Washington Cassandra Searles for Columns magazine. A perfect gray Northwest day, an extra well-placed light and a brave subject unafraid of the cold weather and willing to don both an evening gown and a pair of Sorels made for a fun shoot!

My favorite photo tip #3: Make it meaningful to you.
Kyla and Travis love to visit Whidbey Island, so that’s where we shot their recent engagement photo session. After they had lunch in one of their favorite pubs in the picturesque Coupeville, we traipsed around town together for a couple of hours to capture the couple in the charming landscape. You can see more on my website at erinlodiphotography.com/love.
I can always make a hundred suggestions about interesting places where we can go to take photos, but I love helping to create an image that’s intimate and relavant to my subjects. I love that Kyla and Travis chose Whidbey Island and hope that will make these images all the more special for them. When planning your upcoming shoot, where is a special place for you?

My favorite photo tip #2: Look for the light.
When shooting with natural light, times when the sun is lower in the sky, morning or late afternoon — at the “golden hour,” or an overcast day are typically the best times to take pictures.
The next step is to use the available light to its fullest extent. For this shot, I positioned Sarah so that her face was perfectly lit by the sun, and asked her to look right up toward the sky. I love how she looks like she’s glowing, and for good reason!

My favorite photo tip #1: Be ready for anything!
It was Seattle’s stormiest weekend yet this fall when Stephanie and Eric planned to meet me for their engagement photo session. On a dark, rainy and cold Saturday in early December, we texted back and forth throughout the day, making sure we each still prepared to brave the weather, and adding umbrellas to the prop list. Fingers crossed, we kept to our schedule, and the clouds seemed to clear for just for these two. The umbrellas came in handy for the first location, but by the end of our session, it was a perfectly clear and calm evening, ideal for capturing these lovebirds with the Christmas lights background they wanted for their ingenious combination holiday cards/save-the-dates.
I love that Eric and Stephanie were ready for whatever the weather brought our way. It still wasn’t warm when we took this shot, but Stephanie hung her wool coat on a nearby door to show off this adorable dress, and never once looked cold. The best shots can’t be planned, but being ready for them sure can get you a good part of the way there.
